LIA: Learning at work in higher vocational education

LIA is the workplace-based component of a Swedish higher vocational programme. It accounts for around 25 percent of the education, is regulated by MYH and connects classroom theory with real work within the vocational role.

01 · Overview

A workplace-based course that completes the education

LIA, Lärande i arbete, is the workplace-based component of a Swedish higher vocational education (yrkeshögskola, YH). The course is graded by the education provider against the learning objectives in the curriculum and is a prerequisite for the student to receive a vocational qualification.

A LIA placement involves three parties: the student, the workplace and the education provider. Each party has a defined area of responsibility, and the placement is governed by a signed LIA agreement.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions about LIA

What is LIA?

LIA (Lärande i arbete, "learning at work") is the workplace-based component of a Swedish higher vocational education (yrkeshögskola). It typically makes up around 25 percent of the programme and is regulated by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education (MYH). The student has a designated supervisor at the workplace and the aim is to connect classroom theory with real assignments within the vocational role.

How long is a LIA placement?

A LIA period usually runs between 6 and 40 weeks depending on the programme and course. The curriculum specifies the exact scope, the number of LIA periods and the order in which they take place.

Who is responsible for what during LIA?

The education provider is responsible for learning objectives, assessment and the agreement. The company provides the workplace, the supervisor and meaningful work tasks. The student is responsible for attendance, goal fulfilment and documentation. All three parties sign the LIA agreement before the placement starts.

Does the supervisor need to be certified?

No, MYH does not require formal certification, but the supervisor must have relevant professional experience and time to support the student. Many education providers offer a digital supervisor onboarding course that is recommended before the LIA starts.

Is the student paid during LIA?

No, LIA is unpaid. The student keeps their CSN (Swedish student finance) during the period. Companies may pay an allowance voluntarily but it is not required.

How is LIA graded?

LIA is graded by the education provider against the learning objectives in the curriculum. The supervisor’s appraisal serves as supporting evidence, but the grade is set by the education provider on the scale Fail, Pass and Pass with distinction.
